⁹ When Moses entered the tent, the ^(A)pillar of cloud would descend and stand at the entrance of the tent, and the Lord^[a] would speak with Moses. ¹⁰ And when all the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the entrance of the tent, all the people would rise up and worship, each at his tent door. ¹¹ Thus ^(B)the Lord used to speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. When Moses turned again into the camp, his ^(C)assistant Joshua the son of Nun, a young man, would not depart from the tent.

Moses' Intercession

¹² Moses said to the Lord, “See, ^(D)you say to me, ‘Bring up this people,’ but you have not let me know whom you will send with me. Yet you have said, ^(E)‘I know you by name, and you have also found favor in my sight.’ ¹³ Now therefore, if I have found favor in your sight, please ^(F)show me now your ways, that I may know you in order to find favor in your sight. Consider too that this nation is ^(G)your people.” ¹⁴ And he said, ^(H)“My presence will go with you, and ^(I)I will give you rest.” ¹⁵ And he said to him, ^(J)“If your presence will not go with me, do not bring us up from here. ¹⁶ For how shall it be known that I have found favor in your sight, I and your people? ^(K)Is it not in your going with us, ^(L)so that we are distinct, I and your people, from every other people on the face of the earth?”

¹⁷ And the Lord said to Moses, “This very thing that you have spoken I will do, ^(M)for you have found favor in my sight, and I know you by name.” ¹⁸ Moses said, “Please ^(N)show me your glory.” ¹⁹ And he said, ^(O)“I will make all my goodness pass before you and will proclaim before you my name ‘The Lord.’ And ^(P)I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy. ²⁰ But,” he said, “you cannot see my face, for ^(Q)man shall not see me and live.” ²¹ And the Lord said, “Behold, there is a place by me where you shall stand on the rock, ²² and while my glory passes by I will put you in a ^(R)cleft of the rock, and I will ^(S)cover you with my hand until I have passed by. ²³ Then I will take away my hand, and you shall see my back, but my face shall ^(T)not be seen.”

One of You Will Betray Me

²¹ After saying these things, ^(A)Jesus was troubled in his spirit, and testified, ^(B)“Truly, truly, I say to you, ^(C)one of you will betray me.” ^22 (D)The disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom he spoke. ^23 (E)One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was reclining at table ^(F)at Jesus' side,^{[a] 24} so Simon Peter motioned to him to ask Jesus^[b] of whom he was speaking. ^25 (G)So that disciple, ^(H)leaning back against Jesus, said to him, “Lord, who is it?” ²⁶ Jesus answered, ^(I)“It is he to whom I will give this morsel of bread ^(J)when I have dipped it.” So when he had dipped the morsel, ^(K)he gave it to Judas, ^(L)the son of Simon Iscariot. ²⁷ Then after he had taken the morsel, ^(M)Satan entered into him. Jesus said to him, ^(N)“What you are going to do, do quickly.” ²⁸ Now no one at the table knew why he said this to him. ²⁹ Some thought that, ^(O)because Judas had the moneybag, Jesus was telling him, “Buy what we need ^(P)for the feast,” or that he should ^(Q)give something to the poor. ³⁰ So, after receiving the morsel of bread, he immediately went out. ^(R)And it was night.

A New Commandment

³¹ When he had gone out, Jesus said, ^(S)“Now is the Son of Man glorified, and ^(T)God is glorified in him. ³² If God is glorified in him, ^(U)God will also glorify him in himself, and ^(V)glorify him at once. ³³ Little children, ^(W)yet a little while I am with you. You will seek me, and just ^(X)as I said to the Jews, so now I also say to you, ‘Where I am going you cannot come.’ ^34 (Y)A new commandment ^(Z)I give to you, ^(AA)that you love one another: ^(AB)just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. ^35 (AC)By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
